Spring Update 2

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shape. We used geo-boards to explore how many different quadrilaterals we could make.

In PSHE have been learning about how to stay safe online. Through a series of stories, including ‘Smartie the Penguin’, videos and role play activities we have established a set of rules for keeping ourselves safe when using online games and search engines. We know that it is important never to give our personal information to a stranger including someone we have met online.

In English children have been developing their reading comprehension skills. We have explored fairytales included Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Rapunzel to better our reading comprehension and ability to make inferences.

We wrote our own persuasive wanted poster for Jack as we decided that he had committed more unkind acts than the giant.

In Science we have been learning about Animals and Humans. In our final lesson we considered how to keep ourselves clean and hygienic. We did an experiment using glitter to show how germs could spread quickly. We rubbed hand soap and glitter on our hands, explored and played on the field and then went and observed all the places which had glitter on them. The children were amazing to see tiny bits of glitter had been left all over the play equipment!

We are looking forward to lots of new learning in the Summer term including:

A local town of Newmarket, Fractions, Measures and Calculation in Maths, Writing different text types in English, Sculpting and sketching in Art, and much more.

Spring Update 1

In English this term we have been doing lots of creative storytelling and creative story writing. To link in with our ‘Superhero’ theme, we read the story ‘Eliot Midnight Superhero’. We retold the story and picked out descriptive language, punctuation and sentence structure. We then used Eliot’s adventures as a stimulus to write our own adventure stories.

We shared our stories with Year 1. We loved listening to their stories and sharing our own.

In Maths this half term we have been exploring calculation strategies and learning how to tell the time. We built on our prior learning of telling the time to the nearest hour and half an hour, and began to tell the time to the quarter of the hour and then to the nearest 5 minutes.

When exploring calculation, we developed our number bonds to 10 and 20 and used these to help us mentally add three one digit numbers and find number bonds to 100.

We are currently becoming more confident in using the column strategy to add and subtract.

In our History learning we have been researching Neil Armstrong. We have loved learning about his journey to the moon and did some fabulous diary writing from Neil Armstrong’s point of view. We have also learnt about Tim Peake and his recent journey to space.

In Art we have been learning about Andy Warhol and have been recreating pop art prints. We designed and made a printing template using cardboard and foam shapes. They were extremely fun and look very effective!

During our PE sessions we have been developing our gymnastic skills!

We have been exploring different ways to travel on and off apparatus. We have enjoyed making different shapes with our bodies.

In Music we have using tuned and unturned percussion instruments to keep a beat and accompany a song.
